Ever sit though an infection control classes and wish you had a pillow? Noel Kelsch RDH decided to change that using her warped sense of humor and cutting edge information. Noel is the infection control columnist for RDH magazine, a member of the Organization for Safety and Asepsis and she has developed a comprehensive office compliance program.
Here are some quotes from her audiences;
“Noel has taken a dry subject and turned it into a fascinating day of learning.” Debbie S.
“This course focuses on keeping patients safe and teaches how to keep the practitioner safe and healthy. My only question is when is she coming back?” Cindy K.,
“This course not only leaves you laughing and crying but, it meets credit requirements. For the first time in my career I wanted to know more about infection control! ” David M.
This course includes an update on the 2008 CDC recommendations.
- Eco Friendly Practice:It's Easy Being Green, Wendy St Cyr RDH BS
Speaker:
 Wendy St. Cyr, RDH BS
This course educates dental professionals about sustainable environmental practice and offers ready access to prescreened, eco-friendly products and services. It shares strategies for reducing the impact of oral health care on the environment. US dental offices dump 1.7 billion sterilization pouches into landfills and as much as 500,000 pounds of mercury waste into water supplies each year. There is something we can do about our profession’s contribution to environmental degradation, and it’s easier and more cost-effective than you might think.
In this introductory to Eco Dentistry course, participants will gain practical tips that benefit the planet, patients, and the bottom line. Simple refinements to our hygiene materials and processes that reduce our impact on the planet, improve the quality of our work environment, and shift the patient experience from fear and resistance to nurturing well being. Learn how eco friendly staff can be leaders in both client health and how they are the future of the dental industry.
• Differentiate your practice…stand out from the crowd by being a leader in green dentistry • Increase your new patient flow…attract the high-quality dental consumer that values green practices and loves to tell friends and family about their experience • Improve your bottom line…going green reduces expenses and increases revenues, up to $50,000 per year according to a recent study
- High Tech, Low Tech, No Tech:, Michelle Hurlbutt RDH MS
Speaker: N/A
Innovation is crucial for the advancement of any profession. History has shown that technology is often slow to be accepted, causing a lag between the development of the innovation and its adoption into clinical practice. As dental manufacturers introduce new instruments, devices, materials and techniques to stimulate dental professionals to embrace new standards for care, there comes a time when new technology should replace traditional methods of practice. To remain competent health care providers in a rapidly changing and advancing health care environment, dental professionals should become informed about innovation and technology in clinical practice. This course utilizes audience response system technology to guarantee a fun and interactive session.
After attending this course, the dental professional should be able to:
• Discuss the role of technology and innovation in dental and dental hygiene practice • Identify the indications for and evaluation of advanced diagnostic and treatment modalities • Compare and contrast advanced diagnostic and treatment modalities available to the dental professional
Day 2: Sat Mar 27, 2010
| - Oral Infections and the System Risk, Anne Bosy RDH M Ed
Speaker: N/A
This presentation will discuss the treatment paradigms, oral biofilms development, enzymes (bacterial and immune response) and metabolic by product effects. Standard treatment of oral infections and discussion about the success of these methods will be included.
Followin this: Oral Infections and the System Risk - should we be concerned? will be explored. The OraFesh System and its components will be explained- this includes microbiology slide taking and assessment as well as nutrition assessment within the dental practice.
- Door Prizes will be awarded by Exhibitors
Speaker: N/A
- Yoga Session Saturday morning, Robin Leslie RDH
Speaker:
Robyn Leslie, RDH IEHP Certified Yoga Instructor
We will focus on the shoulders and the hips to help release the tight muscles brought about by dental hygiene practise.
If we consider the skeleton as the structural foundation for the muscles and fascia, we can systematically work with the bones to help restructure the musculature. We will use the fundamentals of yoga: the breath and movement, to teach grounding and centering and help participants find a place of inner stillness that can be accessed daily to help decrease stress and increase coping mechanisms and relaxation.
- Enamel Therapy: “The Next Generation of Care", Dr. Fiona Collins DDS MBA MA
Speaker: N/A
The changing paradigm in caries management has widened our choices and decisions for enamel therapy and preventive care. As caries prevention and therapy have evolved from a surgical model to a medical model, the noninvasive management of caries has expanded.
This course will include discussion on the incidence and demographics of caries, historic trends and the medical model. CAMBRA and other models used for caries risk assessment as well as current diagnostic tools are important tools in this model. Risk-based strategies that can be integrated into preventive protocols for all age groups will be discussed, including available fluoride delivery vehicles as well as the latest ACP and ACP-driven technologies and the role they play in preventive therapies and their synergistic effects. Participants will gain a better understanding of current preventive protocols and the noninvasive management of caries.
- Points on Piercing, Betsy Reynolds RDH MS
Speaker:
 Betsy Reynolds, RDH MS
As orofacial piercings become more common, the healthcare professional must become more familiar with the unique healing dynamics, potential post-piercing sequelae, piercing care strategies, and dental implications associated with this trend. Presented in a relaxed, multimedia forum utilizing specific case studies, the participant will learn about:
Epithelialization of Piercings - Healing of pierced sites involve unique cellular dynamics that impact care and treatment in the dental setting. The wound healing process will be explored to aid the participant in rendering safe, effective and comprehensive care to the pierced patient.
Irritations and Infections - The participant will become familiar with the common signs and symptoms associated with irritations and infections of the pierced site. Common causes for these maladies will be presented to enable the participant to offer recommendations to the pierced patient.
Care of Piercings - Aftercare protocol for the pierced site entails understanding the healing process, recognizing suitable cleansing solutions, devising an appropriate method for cleaning jewelry, and maintaining a healthy pierced site. Participants will become familiar with over-the-counter as well as prescription products available for their pierced patients.
Considerations for Orofacial Piercings - Piercings in the head and neck regions pose interesting challenges when rendering health care. An in-depth overview of popular piercings will be explored along with dental treatment care modifications.
Oral Examination Strategies - Comprehensive intra- and extraoral examination protocols will be reviewed to allow the clinician to assess tissues for sequelae from the piercing as well as scrutinize the oral cavity for tissue changes associated with possible malignancies.
Case Studies - Other body modification procedures that may impact health care delivery will be presented. Specific cases will be offered to the participants in order to further understanding of the current trends being pursued in this field.
